The event 'The Silver Mile' will be held on Stephens Green on Wednesday September 13th for the charity One in Four. The aim of this event is to complete a mile of €2 coins around the perimeter of Stephens Green.
This event takes the idea of a standard charity street collection and develops into a more involved, interactive concept. It sets a challenge to the public to hep ‘complete’ the mile; this is achieved by laying €2, side-by-side, to cover a distance of one mile. We are delighted to have Newstalk 106 and The Daily Star as media partners for the Silver Mile. We appreciate the support of George Hook who will be launching 'The Silver Mile' and will promote it on the programme 'The Right Hook' which is broadcasted on Newstalk 106fm Monday - Friday 4.30 - 7pm.
Venue
The event will take place on the perimeters of St. Stephens’ Green on Wednesday September 13th 2006. The perimeter of the green is reported to be one old Irish mile in length and the Green is a world recognised landmark, centrally located and easily accessed.
How it works
The public will be invited to give €2 coins which will be placed on the pavement side-by-side. This trail will gradually move around the entire perimeter of the park until we have successfully completed ‘The Silver Mile’. For security reasons the actual trail of coins will never be longer than 3 metres long; each further metre of coins collected will be represented by silver ribbon which will be woven through the rails of the Green. The challenge will be complete when the entire distance around St Stephens Green is wrapped in Silver Ribbon.
Use of Funds Collected
All monies collected at the event will be used to fund the Therapy and Advocacy programmes at One in Four. The organisation offers psychotherapy and advocacy to women and men who have experienced sexual violence. The service receives approx. 50% of its required funding through grants from Government but needs to raise some €400,000 annually to deliver its services. The charity currently delivers some 5,000 psychotherapy sessions annually and further supports 500 women and men through its advocacy programme each year.
