Attacker 'smelled of sweet cologne'

A number of women who were violently attacked by a man while walking in a midlands town have described how the culprit wore an "overpowering" aftershave.

Gardai investigating five attacks on women in Athlone, Co Westmeath in the past 14 months have said more than one woman reported a "sweet smelling" cologne on her attacker.

Detectives, students and residents of the town came together yesterday in a coordinated response to the attacks, which have caused serious concern.

More than 700 men have had their photographs taken as part of the inquiry, while DNA samples have also been volunteered.

Yesterday, students at the Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) handed out leaflets urging students not to walk alone at night and to be alert.

Similarities

Superintendent Aidan Glacken said there were "some similarities" between the five attacks, two of which occurred last week.
