Charities have held an emergency meeting to try and resolve the problem of plummeting donations as a result of the international economic turmoil.
Fundraisers from 37 of the country's biggest charities met recently to discuss the crisis in the sector, which has resulted in projected drops of up to 20pc of monies needed to maintain vital services.
Corporate donations have substantially dried up as a result of the weak markets, according to charities.
There are now worries over the provision of services for the poor and disadvantaged during 2009, at a time when the Government is expected to deliver one of the tightest budgets in history.
