Sex abuse victims forced to wait 18 months for therapy

Victims of sexual abuse are waiting up to a year and a half for therapy because of the Government’s failure to adequately resource services, according to the charity, One in Four.

These figures came on the day it emerged that plans for a national 24- hour social work service are being shelved due to Health Service Executive budgetary constraints.

The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC) said “yet again ... children who are [at] risk, or are victims of abuse... are not deemed to be a financial priority for the Government”.

Up to 150 people are on waiting lists with One in Four for counselling. It will be early 2010 before their needs are met.

“When people pluck up the courage to make a call and ask for help and then have to wait on a waiting list, we just have to think it is completely unacceptable,” said ISPCC executive director Maeve Lewis.
