Charity wants public to go extra mile in fundraiser

The head of a charity supporting victims of sexual abuse has said it is "her nightmare" that a lack of funding could result in the suicide of someone who cannot get vital counselling.

Maeve Lewis, executive director of the One In Four organisation, said 148 men and women affected by sexual violence are currently on its list and in dire need of support.

If further money was available she said One in Four could "easily" treat twice as many people as it does now.

Research has revealed more than one-in-four children (27pc) will experience sexual abuse before the age of 18.

Ms Lewis said: "It worries me greatly when things like depression are linked to sexual abuse, my nightmare would be somebody committing suicide for lack of counselling."

She said the charity struggles to deliver much-needed services on its limited budget. One in Four's Silver Mile campaign aims to raise €125,000 by placing a trail of €2 coins surrounding the perimeter of St Stephen's Green on September 26.

Olympic gold medallist Ronnie Delany, who launched the Silver Mile initiative, called on the public to go the extra mile by supporting the event.
