A Limerick man who was described as a grandfather figure by a young girl who he sexually abused has been jailed for 16 months.
The 61-year-old who cannot be named for legal reasons was convicted by a jury earlier this month on two charges of sexually assaulting the now 16-year-old in 1998 and 2001.
The perpetrator had denied the charges outright and to this day has expressed no remorse which the judge said was regrettable.
During the trial the victim told the court that he abused her almost every day she was alone with him fro the time she was very young.
In her victim impact statement the 16-year-old today said she wanted his freedom to be taken away from him as he took hers.
She said he had been like a grandfather to her and she believed he would protect her from all the bad things in the world but what she needed was protection from him.
She said her mother had to give up her job and sell her home as a result of the abuse.
