March to 'reclaim streets' after sex attacks

A Canselit walk is being organised for women to "Reclaim the Night" in the wake of five attacks in a midlands town.

The demonstration is being organised in Athlone, Co Westmeath, where a suspected serial sex attacker remains at large. Gardai have warned women not to walk alone in the dark following the violent assaults.

However, local woman Liz Shiel said women feel like they're "under curfew" in the town.

"If a woman wants to walk on her own, it's her own choice. It's not always black and white, there is always a good reason. Students often run out of money or for some reason get separated from their friends. Nobody asks to be attacked or raped or bullied," she added.

The walk will take place on October 15 at 8pm from Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) on the Dublin Road. It will pass over the Bonavalley Bridge, an area close to where four women were attacked since August 2007.

"Reclaim the Night has been going since the 1970s every year in London. It's a big student walk all over the world and we're hoping AIT students will take part. It's a women's march," she added.
