Sexual crime in Ireland is on the increase despite garda figures which show attacks are dropping, according to the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC).
There have been almost consistent year-on-year increases in the number of rape victims coming to the DRCC, with the number last year twice that of 2001.
The centre's annual report for 2007 is in contrast with figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) and gardai which said that sexual assaults are on the decrease.
"Our statistics show that sexual crime is not diminishing. This is very important because these figures are not to be confused with CSO and the gardai's which show that figures regarding sexual violence are down. The figures are not down," said chairman of the DRCC Brendan Spring at the launch of their 2007 report yesterday.
Last year, staff from the centre accompanied 320 rape victims from around the country to the sexual assault treatment unit (SATU) in the Rotunda Hospital, up from 315 in 2006 and 158 in 2001.
Mr Spring said fewer victims were reporting the assaults to gardai, which "distorts the real picture".
