The Ombudsman for Children, Emily Logan, said yesterday she would "not relent" in her attempts to strengthen the constitutional position of children in Ireland.
The comments come as concern mounts over the Government's commitment to hold a referendum on child protection.
Children's Minister Barry Andrews signalled this week the Government may instead introduce new laws to strengthen child protection and boost children's rights.
Chair of the children's rights Oireachtas committee, Fianna Fail TD Mary O'Rourke, also admitted that changes in the legal code were more likely than a referendum. The Government had pledged to hold a referendum following the striking down of the offence of statutory rape by the courts two years ago.
Yesterday Ms Logan, speaking at the launch of the conference of the European Network of Ombudspersons for Children (ENOC), said she was aware of comments made by individuals. But she insisted she would continue to look for the best possible solution that could be developed for children.
Reports
She said she would be interested to hear what the Oireachtas committee would have to say on the matter when it reported at the end of November.
