Cardinal defends position on victims of abuse

From RTE News online

Cardinal Desmond Connell stated emphatically today that the welfare of children and not the protection of the Catholic Church has been his first concern as archbishop.

The Cardinal was responding to calls for a state investigation into how clerical child sexual abuse was handled in his dioceses.

Meanwhile, a representative of victims of the Wexford priest, Father Sean Fortune, has given a cautious welcome to the government's plan to establish a non-statutory inquiry into the handling of abuse in Ferns diocese.

But a spokesman for other survivors groups has called for a full tribunal to investigate all abuse in the Church in the Republic.
