Gardaí set up special unit for clerical sex abuse

From RTE News Online

The Garda Commissioner has set up a specialist unit to investigate all cases and allegations of clerical child sexual abuse.

The investigation team is being led by Detective Chief Superintendent Sean Camon, the Head of the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, who will work full time on this investigation.

A core team of 20 detectives, it will examine all previous cases, investigations and reports of clerical child sexual abuse and begin investigating new allegations all over the country.

Cardinal promises 'full cooperation'
Cardinal Desmond Connell has promised that his diocese will co-operate fully with any enquiry into clerical child sex abuse set up by what he calls "an appropriate authority".

In a statement last night, the Cardinal said he remained convinced that Judge Gillian Hussey's Commission was fully equipped to carry out such a task.

He said the Judge, having where necessary heard the relevant expert advice, would decide whether certain matters on church files should remain confidential.
