The convicted child abuser, Fr Ivan Payne, has been released from prison at the Curragh Camp.
Fr Payne, who is 59, was convicted in June 1998 on 13 sample charges of indecent assault on nine boys between 1968 and 1987.
RTE News has learned he was released from prison early this morning, after serving nearly four and a half years. The remainder of his six-year sentence was suspended in accordance with normal practice.
He remains a priest and is in the care of the Dublin Archdiocese, although he has no ministry or appointment.
He abused patients in Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin while chaplain there, as well as altar boys in Cabra and Sutton. His victims ranged in ages from 11 to 14.
It is estimated that his abuse has cost the Archdiocese around €400,000 in compensation and legal fees.
This includes £30,000 paid to Andrew Madden, who in 1994 became the first clerical child sex abuse victim in Ireland to go public.Posted by paul at October 26, 2002 10:01 PM
