Man jailed for sexual abuse of 8-year-old girl

From RTE News Online

A 25-year-old County Waterford man has been sentenced to a year in prison after he pleaded guilty at Waterford Circuit Court to sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl over a 3 month period.

The court heard that the offences took place in the sitting room of the girl's home and at soccer grounds in County Waterford. They came to light when the girl told her mother.

The man, who cannot be named, was a friend of the girl's brother.

He pleaded guilty to two sample counts of sexual assault between September and December 2000.

The judge said that unfortunately a huge number of people had this fixation which seemed to be very common in Irish society. He added that a serious view must be taken of this type of offence because of the appalling consequence for the victims.

An order was made entering the man's name on the Register of Sexual Offenders.

One year? The judge said "a serious view must be taken of this type of offence" so he gives him one year? That poor girl is damaged for life and the abuser gets one year? I was under the impression that judges were supposed to dispense justice.

How would a Judge rule on a case like this had he been a victim of sexual abuse? It clearly shows how out of touch they are. So much for their 'academic qualifications' because at the end of the day, to them, it's all academic!
