Moral Bankruptcy: US Cardinal Law
From RTE News Online
Cardinal Bernard Law of the Boston Archdiocese will meet Pope John Paul at the Vatican today amid widening calls for his resignation. The Cardinal is at the centre of a storm of controversy in the United States over the Catholic Church's handling of clerical sex abuse cases.
Earlier this year, when Cardinal Law went to Rome, he offered his resignation. But he was asked to stay on and work through the controversy surrounding his handling of clerical abuse.
However, the problem in the Boston Archdiocese has only worsened and
the revelations of sex abuse have continued.
The Boston Archdiocese is now close to declaring bankruptcy and the Cardinal has been subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury.
Cardinal Law has also continued to lose public support and today as he meets with the Pope, up to 58 priests of the Boston diocese have already called for his resignation.
