Doctor sentenced for sexual abuse

A Colonie doctor has received the maximum sentence for sexually abusing his young patients.

Dr. Phillip Riback will serve 48 years in prison and five years of probation.

He was convicted in June on 28 of the 30 counts against him. He was accused of sexually abusing 13 of his male patients, ranging in age from 8 to 17.  Riback was a pediatric specialist with the Upstate Neurology Consulting Group.  The parents of the young victims were relieved when the judge handed down the maximum sentence.

Albany County District Attorney Paul Clyne said, "The sentence is thoroughly appropriate. This case was a terrible case. Obviously for the individual victims, it was a traumatic, terrible series of events."

Attorney Paul DerOhannesian said, "It's going to go on. It never gives complete, full satisfaction. We don't look at the sentencing as bringing that type of relief -- it just can't. These kids are going to live with the effects of this abuse."

DerOhannesian represents three families who are bringing a civil lawsuit against Riback.
