Child expert admits abusing girl

A former child psychiatrist has admitted sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Gwynedd, north Wales, after grooming her on the internet.

Dr Julian Morrell, 42, was remanded in custody at Caernarfon Crown Court and is to be sentenced in the new year.

Morrell, of Ealing, west London, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual activity with a child and to meeting a child following sexual grooming.   He was struck off in April for looking at porn on the internet.

The court heard Morrell posed as a 15-year-old boy to meet the girl in an internet chatroom.   They exchanged several e-mails during the following month.   Then Morrell drove from his home in London to a campsite in Snowdonia. He told the girl he was 32 before sexually assaulting her.   He then camped in the area for a further two days.

The following month the married father-of-two again drove to the campsite and sexually assaulted the girl once more, before immediately collapsing the tent and driving home.   The girl's parents found out in October and called the police.

Morrell had been considered a leading expert in child psychiatry, specialising in sleeping disorders.   He had worked at the Park Hospital for children in Oxford and a children's clinic in Reading, Berkshire.   He was struck off by the General Medical Council in April for looking at child pornography on the internet.   He had been caught looking at similar sites before, but was only suspended by the GMC.

At the time of his arrest for the offences he admitted on Thursday, Morrell was training to be a plumber.
