Gandhi Hosts New SVV Clinic

by Kalkidan Muluken of The Daily Monitor (Addis Ababa)

The Gandhi Hospital in Addis Ababa is due to open a model clinic for sexual violence victims, The Daily Monitor learnt.

This clinic that cost a total of 90,000 birr to build will be open for every woman who needs the help of the clinic, it was stated.

"The model clinic is run by government rules and regulation and will have a better information storage technology." Dr. Yirgu GebreHiwot, Coordinator of Sexual Reproductive Health Right (SRHR) and Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG) said.

He also added that Ethiopia with a 871/100,000 mortality rate and with more than 100 harmful practices still being practiced, 8 out of 10 women are victims of sexual violence.

"This indicates that a lot of people are not aware of Reproductive Health Rights (RHR)." The doctor said.

At a one day work shop for media people on sexual and reproductive health rights, Mr. Solomon Kumbi president of ESOG said, "Sexual and reproductive health is highly related with development and the purpose of this work shop is to make media people aware of the declarations and rights of sexual and reproductive health."
