Mother Gets Life in Rape of Girl

A mother was sentenced to life plus 21 years Friday for letting her boyfriend rape and impregnate her 11-year-old daughter.

A Fulton County jury found Julia Johnson, 38, guilty of being a party to the crime of rape, cruelty to children and contributing to the deprivation of a minor.

"It is a mother's duty to protect her children," Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard said, "and in Julia Johnson's case, she failed criminally."

The girl, now 12, gave birth to a baby boy last month. DNA tests confirmed that Johnson's boyfriend, Trianthony Cannon, 36, is the baby's father.

Cannon is serving life plus 80 years after pleading guilty to rape, child molestation and assault charges.

The girl and her brother are in foster care, and the baby has been put up for adoption.

The prosecution presented evidence to the jury that Cannon raped the girl about 50 times and that the girl's mother not only knew about it but also pleaded for his release from jail after he was arrested.

The girl testified in trial that Cannon had sex with her in an upstairs bedroom "a lot" and that "Mommy said don't tell anyone because they would take me away."
