One in Four welcomes the publication of The Ferns Report

One in Four, the national charity that supports women and men who have experienced sexual violence, today welcomed the launch of The Ferns Report, the report of the non-statutory inquiry into clerical sexual abuse in the Diocese of Ferns.

The Ferns Report outlines over one hundred allegations of clerical sexual abuse against a total of 26 priests. As the allegations of clerical sexual abuse detailed span four decades, the resulting investigation of the extensive knowledge of the Diocese of Ferns, the wider Roman Catholic Church authorities and State agencies has resulted in a complex and substantive report.

The report highlights areas of grave concern in relation to current child protection and criminal legislation. It is vital that these issues be properly and fully considered.

Those who came before the inquiry to speak of their own experiences of the sexual crimes perpetrated upon them did so with a determination to expose the truth of the past, and to ensure that no child could be so abused again in the future. That courage and determination demands  that each of us, as citizens of the state, our elected representative, and those in authority elsewhere discharge their responsibilities fully and act upon the findings and recommendations contained within this report.

One in Four would like to commend the work and the integrity of the inquiry team. We recognise the enormous task that they faced in carrying out this investigation. We are all indebted to Mr Justice Frank Murphy, Dr. Larraine Joyce and Dr. Helen Buckley and all those within the Inquiry team, for the objectivity, compassion and respect they displayed throughout the inquiry process.

One in Four is now examining the report in more detail and will release a further and more detailed response at a press conference at our offices this evening at 7pm.
