Press Release 1st Feb 2008

One in Four calls upon Cardinal Desmond Connell to co-operate fully and transparently with the Commission of Investigation into Clerical Sexual Abuse in the Archdiocese of Dublin.

One in Four, the national charity that supports women and men who have experienced sexual violence, has voiced its grave concern at moves by Cardinal Desmond Connell to prevent the Commission of Investigation into Clerical Sexual Abuse in the Archdiocese of Dublin from accessing files relevant to its investigation.

"It is disturbing that more than five years on from the disclosure of allegations of sexual abuse made against over one hundred priests of the Archdiocese of Dublin and commitments from senior church figures to work to establish the truth of these cases that Cardinal Connell has decided to attempt to block the work of this statutory investigation", said Deirdre Fitzpatrick, Advocacy Director at One in Four.

"Any reasonable person must surely ask why Cardinal Connell has decided to take this action. What exactly is the Cardinal determined to hide? In 2002 Cardinal Connell said that "only when the truth has been established can the requirements of justice and reconciliation be met". Where now is the Cardinals determination to work to establish that truth and what now are we to make of his commitment to justice and reconciliation?"

"This cynical attempt to use legal manoeuvres to limit the work of this statutory investigation is a slap in the face to the women and men who have waited decades for truth, for justice and for some sense of closure."

"One in Four is calling upon Cardinal Connell to abandon his High Court action and co-operate fully and transparently with the Commission of Investigation. Truth and justice demand nothing less of him."
