Press Release – August 1st 2006

One in Four welcomes the new criminal offence Reckless Endangerment of Children

“..this new legislation will work to ensure that those in positions of authority and responsibility who demonstrate a wilful disregard for the welfare of children or are guilty of failures such as those evidenced  in the Ferns Report will be held to account and brought before the courts” O'Gorman

One in Four, the national charity which supports people who have experienced sexual violence, today welcomed the passage into law through the Criminal Justice Act 2006,  the new criminal offence; Reckless Endangerment of Children. The creation of said offence was a key recommendation of the Ferns Report, published in October of last year. The existence of this offence will mean that any person in any position of authority who wilfully disregards the welfare of children will be subject to prosecution under this legislation; this new offence carries a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment.

Speaking today, Colm O’Gorman, Director of One in Four said:

“The creation of this criminal offence was a key recommendation which we sought from the Ferns Inquiry, we believe that this new legislation will work to ensure that those in positions of authority and responsibility who demonstrate a wilful disregard for the welfare of children or are guilty of failures such as those evidenced in the Ferns Report will be held to account and brought before the courts”

O’Gorman added “This is one further step towards ensuring that all of our children are better protected and that the dreadful failures which allowed abuse on such an appalling scale in the diocese of Ferns are prevented in the future, One in Four will continue to lobby government and work to ensure that all of the recommendations of the Ferns Report are implemented”
